Cetona

The medieval hill town of Cetona is nestled in the green of the countryside and woodlands on the slopes of mount Cetona.

The town has a long, rich history, and offers breath-taking views over the surrounding landscape. Visitors can settle into a more relaxed rhythm, as the local way of life has remained unchanged over the centuries.

The town is laid out as a ring around mount Cetona, leading up to the imposing tower at the top. Approaching the town, visitors find themselves in a large, open piazza, with a multitude of streets and alleys leading away towards the heart of the town, enticing them to explore. Set off from the square to discover historical palazzos, the Santissima Trinità church, and a Civic Museum dedicated to prehistoric mount Cetona, with a wide array of exhibits that testify to the ancient origins of the area. Not far from the town, visitors can explore a system of caves in the depths of the woods, home to one of the first human settlements in the area: finds date back to more than 50,000 years ago.

The nearby Archeodrome features a faithful reproduction of a prehistoric village, where educational workshops are held for children. Cetona also has plenty to offer visitors who appreciate fine foods and wines: local specialities include the wonderful extra virgin olive oil, cured meats, and red wine.
