Giostra del Saracino in Sarteano: history, tradition and the spirit of the contrada

These are individuals whose dedication and passion help shape the territory and create memorable experiences for both visitors and local communities.

In the heart of the Valdichiana Senese, in the town of Sarteano, the Giostra del Saracino is one of the most eagerly awaited events of the summer. On 15 August, the event will celebrate its 57th edition, bringing together history, tradition, and a strong sense of community.

Sharing its story is Sergio Cappelletti, Honorary President of the Giostra del Saracino Association, who has devoted much of his life to this historic event. Over the years, he has taken on many different roles: he began as the herald, served as captain of a contrada for seven years, led the Association as president for nineteen years, and has been its Honorary President since 2023.

As Sergio Cappelletti explains, the Giostra del Saracino traces its origins back to the Middle Ages. Originally conceived as a military exercise, it gradually evolved into a popular celebration and, over time, into the spectacular historical event that continues to captivate both locals and visitors every year.

The event takes place in Sarteano's main square, specially prepared with a 20-centimetre-high and 6-metre-wide tuff track where the contrade and their horsemen compete. The race demands exceptional skill: it must be fast, uninterrupted, and completed in no more than 3.4 seconds. The ride must remain continuous throughout the course, as any hesitation results in the score being cancelled, even if the target is successfully struck.

For Sergio Cappelletti, the Giostra del Saracino is much more than a competition between contrade. It is an event that embodies Sarteano's identity and reflects the deep bond between the local community and its history. Unsurprisingly, his "place of the heart" is the very square where the Giostra is held each year—a place where every resident of Sarteano and every spectator becomes immersed in an atmosphere rich in history, tradition, and a profound sense of belonging.
