Valdichiana Trail. 200 km
200 km Cycling Through Southern Tuscany
Located in the heart of southern Tuscany, the Valdichiana Senese offers an extraordinary variety of experiences: unspoilt nature, centuries of history, outstanding food and wine, and a wealth of thermal springs. This cycling route invites travellers to discover some of the most authentic and fascinating corners of the region.
The route winds through the ancient valley of the Clanis River, crossing a constantly changing landscape: from rolling hills dotted with vineyards and olive groves to the tranquil waters of Lakes Chiusi and Montepulciano, reaching beautiful natural areas such as Mount Cetona and the Pietraporciana Nature Reserve.
Each town and village tells a different story, spanning from prehistoric times and the Etruscan civilisation to the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Along the way, you will discover a rich cultural heritage, complemented by experiences dedicated to thermal wellness, local food and wine, and outdoor activities.
The route is designed to suit different levels of cycling experience. The main circuit can be divided into several shorter loops, while the presence of railway stations along the way (Chiusi–Chianciano Terme, Montepulciano Stazione, Torrita di Siena and Sinalunga) allows you to choose your own stages and level of difficulty, creating a cycling experience tailored to your preferences.
The route includes both paved and unpaved sections, so trekking bikes, gravel bikes or mountain bikes are recommended. With numerous towns, services and accommodation options along the way, it is also ideal for exploring by e-bike.
Chiusi, the starting point of the route, is easily accessible by train.
The best times to enjoy this cycling route are spring and autumn, when mild temperatures and beautiful natural light bring out the colours of the landscape, offering unforgettable views along the way.
