The Nobile Trail

The Nobile Trail in Montepulciano

18km between the hills where the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is born

The Nobile Trail takes its name from the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG, as it is right along the sides of the vineyards of Vino Nobile that this beautiful trail runs.

It starts from the Church of Sant'Agnese di Montepulciano, along Via Piero Calamandrei, then it turns right into Via Mencattelli, and then right again into Via dei Canneti. From here, you can enjoy a spectacular view over Montefollonico. The Temple of San Biagio will suddenly appear on the horizon in all its splendor. Once you have walked down the evocative Cypress Avenue of the Rimembranza and crossed the intersection, you will enter the Via di Fonte al Vescovo. This is where the descent towards the Valdichiana begins. Then, the trail runs along the spectacular area of the Balze, i.e. cliffs of laminated tuff rich in marine fossils. Once you have walked down the whole Via di Martiena, you will see the yellow-ocher façade of the Church of the Madonna della Querce.

From here, through a country road, you will get to Via Antica Chiusina, where the trail changes back into an asphalt road again. Continuing towards Cervognano, your view will open on the vineyards of Nobile. After passing the Salcheto ditch, you have to turn right onto a gravel road to reach Argiano. Going along Via di Argiano, you will pass next to a small country cemetery before entering the Wood of the Cerraie. Here, a woodland trail leads to the Madonna del Cerro, i.e. a brick votive niche hosting a sacred image (according to tradition, the votive niche was built by a charcoal burner who, crossing the Wood of the Cerraie during a storm, was hit by a tree that had split in half. Remaining unscathed, he attributed his salvation to an act of the Virgin Mary, since the recess of the felled tree had brought back her image). Once out of the woods, you have to cross the provincial road S.P. 326 in the direction of the Lake Montepulciano, where the trail joins with that of the Bonifica [Trail of the Reclamation].
